Accident procedure

Case 1: When a traffic accident occurs

  1. Aid the injured: check the condition of anyone hurt and call 999.
  2. Call the police: you must call 999 to report the accident regardless of who is at fault.
  3. Confirm the other party's details: record their name, address, contact details and so on.
  4. Contact the rental shop: report the accident to our staff and follow their instructions.

Case 2: Single-vehicle accident / fall / breakdown

  1. Contact the rental shop.
  2. Follow the instructions given.

Loss-of-use compensation

  • Applies only when the fall damage reaches the "Moderate" grade or above.
  • Able to ride the bike back to the shop yourself: HKD 1,000
  • Unable to ride it back: HKD 2,500 + towing fee
  • If the key is lost: key-cutting fee + HKD 1,000

Loss-of-use compensation covers the cost of the period during which the vehicle cannot be rented out because it needs repair after an accident or fall. Even if you have purchased "Premium Go — Vehicle Protection", loss-of-use compensation is still payable separately.

In addition, riding with a detached or damaged mirror, indicator, headlight, tail light or other safety component is not only dangerous but also breaches road traffic law and may incur a fine. If any of the above applies, please do not force the bike to keep running. Riding the vehicle back to the shop in such a condition may still incur the HK$2,500 loss-of-use compensation.

When insurance and protection do not apply

Insurance and protection will not apply to accidents arising in the following situations:

  • Riding without a valid licence
  • Riding under the influence of alcohol
  • Riding without a helmet
  • Ridden by someone other than the driver named in the contract
  • No police report made at the scene (no police accident certificate obtainable)
  • Settling privately with the other party
  • Failure to contact the rental shop at the scene
  • An accident occurring after extending the rental without permission
  • Riding while overloaded
  • Riding off public roads
  • Single-part damage or corrosion caused by improper use
  • Use in any kind of testing or racing
  • Damaging the vehicle on the shop premises
  • Breakdown caused by operating error
  • Use in breach of the rental terms
  • Other exclusions under the insurance policy
Damage Assessment Standard

Motorcycle Damage Assessment Standard

Rentalbike.hk applies a fair standard across all services so that, when a rental motorcycle needs repair after an accident or fall, the scope and cost of the repair do not vary by shop, staff member, district or motorcycle manufacturer.

This English text is a translation for convenience; the Traditional Chinese version prevails.

Damage assessment ratio

Rentalbike.hk's own damage-assessment standard sets the ratios for repairable scratches and dents (using a Hong Kong $5 coin as the reference size):

RatioCoin referenceSizeExample (HKD 500 part)
30%$5 coin × 1About 25 mm or lessHKD 150
40%$5 coin × 2About 26 to 50 mmHKD 200

LightLoss-of-use: None

Parts with a damage ratio below 50%, where repairing damaged parts such as the fairing or muffler allows the bike to keep being ridden.

ModerateLoss-of-use: HKD 1,000 or HKD 2,500

Parts with a damage ratio of 50% or more, where damaged parts must be replaced and the bike cannot be rented out.

SevereLoss-of-use: HKD 2,500

Definition of repair vs. replacement and labour charges

Repair

Repairing scratches, dents and similar damage to a part that does not affect riding.

Labour: None

Replacement

Replacing a part that is broken, cracked, bent or torn in a way that affects riding.

Labour: Yes

Rentalbike.hk uses a uniform labour rate of HKD 800 per hour. For example, replacing a lever on a HONDA CB400SF takes 0.1 hours, so the labour charge is HKD 80.

Repair cost calculation examples

Minor example: brake lever replacement

  • Part cost: HKD 300
  • Labour × 0.1 (hours): HKD 80
  • Loss-of-use: waived
  • Amount charged: HKD 380

Light example: muffler repair (scratches over an area of two $5 coins, charged at 40% of the part cost)

  • Muffler: HKD 3,050 × 40% = HKD 1,220
  • Muffler heat shield: HKD 160 × 40% = HKD 64
  • Loss-of-use: waived
  • Amount charged: HKD 1,284

Moderate example: muffler replacement

  • Muffler: HKD 3,920 × 100% = HKD 3,920
  • Replacement labour: HKD 550 × 0.3 (hours) = HKD 165
  • Loss-of-use: HKD 1,000
  • Amount charged: HKD 5,085
  • If Vehicle Protection has been purchased, the charge for a P-4 grade is the excess HKD 5,000 + HKD 1,000 = HKD 5,085.

Definition of total loss and compensation

A total loss is damage so severe that the vehicle cannot be repaired, or that a mechanic judges cannot be used normally even after repair.

Vehicle Protection not purchased

Our set loss cap for each vehicle (market value) + loss-of-use compensation HKD 2,500

Appendix: Premium Go Self-Managed Vehicle Damage Compensation

(This appendix has the same legal force as the Motorcycle Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions.)

This English text is a translation for convenience; the Traditional Chinese version prevails.

1. Purpose

This appendix sets out the content and terms of the "Premium Go Self-Managed Protection" (the "Protection") offered by Rentalbike.hk. The purpose of the Protection is to provide the renter with an additional vehicle-protection arrangement during the rental period, reducing the repair and compensation liabilities arising from accidental vehicle damage and improving the overall safety and convenience of the rental service.

2. Premium

  • The first-day premium is four hundred and fifty Hong Kong dollars (HK$450).
  • From the second day onwards, the daily premium is half the first-day amount, i.e. two hundred and twenty-five Hong Kong dollars (HK$225).

3. Scope of protection

After purchasing the Protection, the renter receives the following coverage:

  1. Repair-cost waiver (excluding loss of use) — If the vehicle is accidentally damaged during the rental period, the renter is waived from all vehicle repair costs arising from that accident, other than loss-of-use compensation.
  2. Reduced rental deposit — The original rental deposit (ranging from HK$8,500 to HK$18,000 depending on the vehicle class) is adjusted to five thousand Hong Kong dollars (HK$5,000).
  3. Waiver of booking change or cancellation fee — After purchasing the Protection, the renter is entitled to one free booking change or cancellation, with no handling fee payable.
  4. Liability cap for total loss or theft — If the vehicle is stolen or written off during the rental period, the renter's maximum compensation liability is capped at the vehicle's then-current market value.
  5. Exclusions — The Protection does not cover any rented accessories (including but not limited to helmets, rain gear, tools and the vehicle licence) or the cost of damaging or replacing tyres.

4. Claims procedure

  1. Accident notification — In the event of any traffic accident, vehicle damage or loss, the renter must notify Rentalbike.hk within twenty-four (24) hours and submit an accident report, photos or video of the scene and (where applicable) the police report number.
  2. Vehicle inspection and damage assessment — After an accident, the vehicle must be sent to a location designated by Rentalbike.hk for inspection, where the workshop department carries out a damage assessment to confirm whether the event falls within the scope of the Protection.
  3. Claim decision — If the damage is confirmed to be within scope, Rentalbike.hk will arrange the vehicle repair and bear the related costs (excluding the loss-of-use portion). If the damage is caused by an excluded matter, the renter's negligence, a breach of law or a breach of the rental terms, the Protection does not apply and the related costs are borne in full by the renter.
  4. Document and record keeping — Rentalbike.hk will keep all accident records, repair invoices and related materials for claims and internal management purposes.

5. Conditions and limitations

  • The Protection applies only to the period and vehicle stated in the rental contract signed with Rentalbike.hk.
  • Once purchased, the Protection is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • If the renter breaches any term of the rental contract — including but not limited to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, speeding, riding without a licence, illegal modification, sub-letting or taking part in competitions — the Protection lapses immediately and Rentalbike.hk has the right to recover all related losses from the renter.
  • The Protection is an internal self-managed risk-sharing scheme of Rentalbike.hk and is not underwritten by any third-party insurance company.

6. Legal effect

This appendix is an inseparable part of the Motorcycle Rental Agreement Terms & Conditions and has the same legal force. If there is any inconsistency between this appendix and the main contract, the provisions of this appendix prevail in respect of protection-related matters. Rentalbike.hk reserves the right of final interpretation and decision over this appendix.
